παῖδες δὲ καὶ ‘νεανίαι διοιδοῦντες ὥσπερ εἴδωλα κατὰ τὰς ἀγορὰς “ἀνειλοῦντο καὶ κατέπιπτον, ὅπη τινὰ τὸ πάθος καταλαμβάνοι· θάπτειν δὲ τοὺς προσήκοντας οὔτε ἴσχυον οἱ κάμνοντες, καὶ τὸ διευτονοῦν ὤκνει, διά τε τὸ πλῆθος τῶν νεκρῶν καὶ τὸ κατὰ σφᾶς ἄδηλον. πολ- λοὶ γοῦν τοῖς ὑπʼ αὐτῶν θαπτομένοις ἐπαπέθνη- “σκον, πολλοὶ δʼ ἐπὶ τὰς θήκας, πρὶν ἐπιστῆναι τὸ χρεὼν) προῆλθον.

English · Claude translation

Children and young men, swollen, wandered like phantoms through the market places and fell wherever their suffering overtook them. The sick had no strength to bury their relatives, and those still vigorous shrank from it, both because of the number of the dead and because of their own uncertain fate. Many, indeed, fell dead on those they were burying, and many went to their graves before their end had come.
