μετά γε μὴν τὴν τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν ἀνάληψιν Ἰουδαίων πρὸς τῷ κατʼ αὐτοῦ τολμήματι ἤδη καὶ κατὰ τῶν ἀποστόλων αὐτοῦ πλείστας ὅσας ἐπιβουλὰς μεμηχανημένων, πρώτου τε Στεφάνου λίθοις ὑπʼ αὐτῶν ἀνῃρημένου, εἶτα δὲ μετʼ αὐ- τὸν Ἰακώβου, ὃς ἦν Ζεβεδαίου μὲν παῖς, ἀδελφὸς δὲ Ἰωάννου, τὴν κεφαλὴν ἀποτμηθέντος, ἐπὶ πᾶσί τε Ἰακώβου, τοῦ τὸν αύτόθι τῆς ἐπισκοπῆς θρόνον πρώτου μετὰ τὴν τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν ἀνάληψιν κεκληρωμένου, τὸν προδηλωθέντα τρόπον μεταλλάξαντος, τῶν τε λοιπῶν ἀποστόλων μυρία εἰς θάνατον ἐπιβεβουλευμένων, καὶ τῆς μὲν Ἰουδαίας γῆς ἀπεληλαμένων, ἐπὶ δὲ τῇ τοῦ κηρύγματος διδασκαλίᾳ τὴν εἰς σύμπαντα τὰ ἔθνη στειλαμένων πορείαν σὺν δυνάμει τοῦ Χριστοῦ φήσαντος αὐτοῖς “πορευθέντες μαθητεύ- “σατε πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου, ”

After the ascension of our Saviour, the Jews, in addition to their crime against him, had already devised very many plots against his apostles too: first Stephen was killed by them with stones; then after him James, the son of Zebedee and brother of John, was beheaded; and finally James, who first after our Saviour's ascension had been allotted the throne of the episcopate there, died in the manner shown before; and the rest of the apostles, against whom countless plots were laid to kill them, were driven out of the land of Judea and went on their way to all the nations to teach the message, with the power of Christ, who had said to them, “Go and make disciples of all the nations in my name.”
