“καὶ τοῦτο ὁ πρεσβύτερος ἔλεγε “ Μάρκος μὲν ἑρμηνευτὴς Πέτρου γενόμενος, ὅσα ἐμνη- “ μόνευσεν ἀκριβῶς ἔγραψεν, οὐ μέντοι τάξει, τὰ ὑπο “ τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἢ λεχθέντα ἢ πραχθέντα. οὔτε γὰρ “ἤκουσε τοο͂ κυρίου οὔτε παρηκολούθησεν αὐτῷ, “ὕστερον δὲ, ὡς ἔφην, Πέτρῳ, ὃς πρὸς τἀς χρείας ἐποι- ’’ εἷτο τὰς διδασκαλίας, ἀλλʼ οὐχ ὥσπερ σύνταξιν τῶν “κυριακῶν ποιούμενος λόγων, ὥστε οὐδὲν ἥμαρτε “Μάρκος, οὕτως ἔνια γράψας ὡς ἀπεμνημόνευσεν. " ἑνὸς γὰρ ἐποιήσατο πρόνοιαν, τοῦ μηδὲν ὧν ἤκουσε " παραλιπεῖν, ἢ ψεύσασθαί τι ἐν αὐτοῖς.” ταῦτα οὑν ἱστόρηται τῷ Παπίᾳ περὶ τοῦ Μάρκου.
English · Claude translation
“And the presbyter used to say this: Mark, having become Peter's interpreter, wrote down accurately, though not in order, as much as he remembered of the things said or done by the Christ. For he had neither heard the Lord nor followed him, but later, as I said, followed Peter, who used to give his teachings as the needs required, but not making, as it were, an arrangement of the Lord's oracles; so that Mark did no wrong in writing some things as he remembered them. For he took care of one thing: to leave out nothing of what he had heard, and to state nothing falsely in them.” This is what Papias has related about Mark.
