ἀδυνάτου δʼ ὄντος ἡμῖν ἅπαντας ἐξ ὀνόματος ἀπαριθμεῖσθαι, ὅσοι ποτὲ κατὰ τὴν πρώτην τῶν ἀποστόλων διαδοχὴν ἐν ταῖς κατὰ τὴν οἰκουμένην ἐκκλησίαις γεγόνασι ποιμένες ἢ καὶ εὐαγ- γελισταὶ, τούτων εἰκότως ἐξ ὀνόματος γραφῇ μόνων τῂν μνήμην κατατεθείμεθα, ὡν ἔτι καὶ νῦν εἰς ἡμᾶς διʼ ὑπομνημάτων τῆς ἀποστολικῆς διδασκαλίας ἡ παράδοσις φέρεται·

Since it is impossible for us to enumerate by name all who were ever shepherds or evangelists in the churches throughout the world in the first succession of the apostles, we have naturally recorded by name in writing only those of whom the tradition of the apostolic teaching still comes down to us through memoirs;
