Summary: Luke wrote to give a sure account, learned from Paul and the other apostles, in place of rash earlier attempts.

ὁ δὲ Λουκᾶς ἀρχόμενος καὶ αὐτὸς τοῦ κατʼ αὐτὸν συγγράμματος τὴν αἰτίαν προύθηκε, δι ἣν πεποίηται τὴν σύνταξιν, δηλῶν ὡς ἄρα πολλῶν καὶ ἄλλων προπετέστερον ἐπιτετηδευκότων διήγησιν ποιήσασθαι ὧν αὐτὸς πεπληροφόρητο λόγων, ἀναγκαίως ἀπαλλάττων ἡμὰς τῆς περὶ τοὺς ἄλλους ἀμφηρίστου ὑπολήψεως τὸν ἀσφαλῆ λόγον ὣν αὐτὸς ἱκανῶς τὴν ἀλήθειαν κατειλήφει, ἐκ τῆς ἅμα Παύλῳ συνουσίας τε καὶ διατριβῆς καὶ τῆς τῶν λοιπῶν ἀποστόλων ὁμιλίας ὠφελημένος, διὰ τοῦ ἰδίου παρέδωκεν εὐαγγελίου.
English · Claude translation
Luke too, at the beginning of his work, set out the reason for which he made his composition, showing that since many others had rather rashly undertaken to compose a narrative of the matters of which he himself had been fully assured, he necessarily freed us from the doubtful opinion about the others and handed down in his own Gospel the sure account of the things whose truth he had sufficiently grasped, benefiting from his companionship and life with Paul and his conversation with the rest of the apostles.
