καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐ- “τοὺς εἰ ἐκ Δαβίδ εἰσι, καὶ ὡμολόγησαν. τότε ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτοὺς πόσας κτήσεις ἔχουσιν, ἢ πόσων χρημάτων κυριεύουσιν. οἱ δὲ εἶπαν ἀμφότεροι ἐννακισχίλια δηνάρια ὑπάρχειν αὐτοῖς μόνα, ἑκάστῳ “αὐτῶν ἀνήκοντος τοῦ ἡμίσεος. καὶ ταῦτα οὐκ ἐν “ἀργυρίοις ἔφασκον ἔχειν, ἀλλʼ ἐν διατιμήσει γῆς πλέθρων τριάκοντα ἐννέα μόνων, ἐξ ὧν καὶ τοὺς ‘φόρους ἀναφέρειν καὶ αὐτοὺς αὐτουργοῦντας δια- ᾿῾τρέφεσθαι.

He asked them whether they were of David's line, and they admitted it. Then he asked them how much property they had or how much money they controlled. And they both said that they had only nine thousand denarii, half belonging to each; and this, they said, they did not have in money, but in the value of only thirty-nine plethra of land, from which they paid the taxes and supported themselves by their own labour.
