καὶ τοῦ Πι- “λάτου παρόντος εἰς Ἰεροσόλυμα περιστάντες τὸ βῆμα “ κατεβόων. ὁ δὲ προῄδει γὰρ αὐτῶν τὴν ταραχὴν) “ τῷ πλήθει τοὺς στρατιώτας ἐνόπλους, ἐσθῆσιν ἰδιω- “ τικαῖς κεκαλυμμένους ἐγκαταμίξας, καὶ ξίφει μὲν “ χρήσασθαι κωλύσας, ξύλοις δὲ παίειν τοὺς κεκρα- “γότας ἐγκελευσάμενος, σύνθημα δίδωσιν ἀπὸ τοῦ “ βήματος. τυπτόμενοι δὲ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πολλοὶ μὲν ἀπὸ “ τῶν πληγῶν, πολλοὶ δὲ ὑπὸ σφῶν αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ φυγῇ “ καταπατηθέντες ἀπώλοντο, πρὸς δὲ τὴν συμφορὰν “ τῶν ἀνῃρημένων καταπλαγὲν τὸ πλῆθος ἐσιώπησεν.

And when Pilate was present in Jerusalem, they surrounded his tribunal and shouted him down. But he (for he knew beforehand of their disturbance) mixed armed soldiers, dressed in civilian clothes, among the crowd, and having forbidden them to use the sword, but ordered them to beat those who shouted with clubs, he gave the signal from the tribunal. The Jews, being beaten, perished, many from the blows and many trampled by one another in the flight; and the crowd, stunned by the fate of those killed, fell silent.”
