καὶ τῶν ἄλλων συστρεφομένων καὶ γὰρ ἥσθησαν “ ἐπὶ πλεῖστον τῇ ἀκροάσει τῶν λόγων), δείσας ‘Ηρώ- “δης τὸ ἐπὶ τοσόνδε πιθανὸν αὐτοῦ τοῖς ἀνθρώποις, “ μὴ ἐπὶ ἀποστάσει τινὶ φέροι, πάντα γὰρ ἐῴκεσαν “συμβουλῇ τῇ ἐκείνου πράξοντες), πολὺ κρεῖττον “ἡγεῖται, πρίν τι νεώτερον ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ γενέσθαι, προ- “λαβὼν ἀναιρεῖν, ἢ μεταβολῆς γενομένης εἰς πρά- “ γματα ἐμπεσὼν μετανοεῖν. καὶ ὁ μὲν ὑποψίᾳ τῇ “Ἡρώδου δέσμιος εἰς τὸν Μαχαιροῦντα πεμφθεὶς, τὸ “ προειρημένον φρούριον, ταύτῃ κτίννυται.

And when others gathered round him (for they were greatly delighted at hearing his words), Herod, fearing that his great persuasiveness with the people might lead to some revolt (for they seemed ready to do anything on his advice), thought it much better to anticipate him and put him to death before any uprising came from him, than to fall into trouble when a change came and then repent. So because of Herod's suspicion he was sent in chains to Machaerus, the fortress mentioned before, and there put to death.
