As gold is defiled by the uncleanness of a pig stirring up the filth with its snout, so the more luxurious women, exalted by abundance into licentiousness, outrage true beauty with the pollutions of sexual pleasure. He gives them, then, a gold ring, and not even this for adornment, but for sealing what is worth guarding at home, in their care of the household. If all were instructed, there would be no need of seals, since servants and masters would be equally just; but since lack of instruction gives much weight toward injustice, we have needed seals. But there are times to relax our strictness. Sometimes we must be indulgent to women who are not fortunate in having a self-controlled husband, and adorn themselves to please him. But let their limit be ambition to please their own husbands only. I would not wish them to practice bodily beauty, but to win their husbands by self-controlled love, a powerful and just medicine. Yet since they wish to be unfortunate in soul, let this be set before them, if they wish to be self-controlled: to calm gently the irrational impulses and desires of their husbands, and quietly lead them toward simplicity by accustoming them little by little to greater self-control.
