Pamphilus of Caesarea

Πάμφιλος · Pamphilus

Pamphilus was a presbyter and scholar at Caesarea in Palestine who collected and copied the works of Origen and founded a school around that library. He was imprisoned and put to death in 310. The Apology for Origen, written in prison with his pupil Eusebius, survives only in the first of its six books, in the Latin of Rufinus.

Notes
A presbyter at Caesarea who built up the library of Origen's writings and was martyred in 310 under Maximinus. Eusebius, his pupil and friend, wrote his Life (now lost). Photius reports that the Apology for Origen was written by Pamphilus in prison with Eusebius's help; Jerome later said Eusebius alone wrote it.
