Clement of Rome

Clement was a leader of the church at Rome at the end of the first century. The letter the Roman church sent to Corinth, known as 1 Clement, has been attributed to him since the second century, although the letter itself names no author. Little else is known of him with certainty.

Notes

Later lists count him as the third bishop of Rome after Peter (Irenaeus, Haer. 3.3.3). Dionysius of Corinth, around 170, names him as the writer of the letter to the Corinthians (Eusebius, Hist. eccl. 4.23.11). Many other writings were later attributed to him.
