διὰ ταύτην οὖν τὴν αἰτίαν πρόγνωσιν εἰληφότες τελείαν κατέστησαν τοὺς προειρημένους, καὶ μεταξὺ ἐπινομὴν δεδώκασιν, ὅπως, ἐὰν κοιμηθῶσιν, διαδέξωνται ἕτεροι δεδοκιμασμένοι ἄνδρες τὴν λειτουργίαν αὐτῶν.

## English translation (Claude)

For this reason, therefore, having received perfect foreknowledge, they appointed those already mentioned, and afterward they gave a further instruction, that if these should fall asleep, other approved men should succeed to their ministry.

## Translation notes

- “A further instruction” (ἐπινομήν): the word is rare and its meaning uncertain; some editors read ἐπιμονήν, “permanence.” This passage is central to later discussions of succession in church office.
